Intellectual disabilities are characterized by limitations in intellectual functioning and adaptive behaviour, which significantly impact a child's ability to learn, communicate, and perform everyday tasks. These disabilities often manifest during childhood and persist throughout a person's lifetime. At our school, we provide specialized support and interventions to help children with intellectual disabilities overcome challenges and achieve their full potential.
How Intellectual Disabilities Affect Special Children:
Intellectual disabilities can affect special children in various ways, including difficulties with learning, problem-solving, memory, and social skills. Children with intellectual disabilities may also experience delays in language development, motor skills, and self-care abilities. These challenges can impact their academic performance, social interactions, and overall quality of life, requiring individualized support and intervention.
Specific Intellectual Disabilities:
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): ASD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by challenges with social communication and interaction, as well as restricted and repetitive behaviours.
Down Syndrome: Down Syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of an extra chromosome 21, leading to developmental delays, intellectual disabilities, and distinctive physical features.
Global Developmental Delay (GDD): GDD is a condition characterized by significant delays in multiple areas of development, including cognitive, motor, speech, and social skills.
Fragile X Syndrome: Fragile X Syndrome is a genetic disorder that causes intellectual disabilities, learning challenges, and behavioural difficulties, often accompanied by features such as hyperactivity and social anxiety.
Adaptive Behaviour: Adaptive behaviour refers to a child's ability to effectively cope with everyday life tasks and demands, such as communication, self-care, social skills, and problem-solving.
